Riverside Lodge
Along the Honga River a chain of islands rises out of the Chesapeake Bay. Hoopers Island is considered the oldest settled area in Dorchester County. The namesake of the islands is Henry Hooper. Hooper was friends with the Calvert Family. The Calverts were an important family many consider to be founders of the State of Maryland. In the mid-17th century, parts of the islands were surveyed for Hooper. The first parcel of land was surveyed by Robert Clift and aptly titled Hooper’s Clifts. The Hoopers Island culture is known for its resiliency, independence and self-reliance. These traits resonate today through the people of Hoopers Island. Because of the relative pristine environment of the islands, remote geography from the world and connection to the natural rhythms of living with the tides, life on Hoopers Island has changed little over the past few centuries.
Standing in the widow’s walk at Riverside Lodge, this fact becomes immediately clear as you look north towards the village of Hoopersville or to the south across the vast salt marsh. Time has slowed for life on Hoopers Island. The Riverside Lodge is a place where the events of the day on the Island or the Century can be measured.
